Experimental Update!
Experiment update! We are glad to announce that researchers at Malta-based project partner AquaBioTech Group have successfully completed a live feed distribution system trial at their onsite facilities. Until now, the research team at AquaBioTech Group has been busy designing, developing, and testing the prototypes for two different live feed distribution systems. Distribution of live feeds such as artemia and rotifers is a critical component of automated fish hatcheries, serving as the lifeline for entire operations. However, using live feeds is not always straightforward. Challenges that hatcheries commonly face when using live feeds include ensuring a high encounter rate between larvae and live feed, while also minimizing waste, reducing bacterial growth, and maintaining a high level of water quality. Precision technologies such as the ones being developed by AquaBioTech Group incorporate timed feeding for optimized feed delivery and multiple deployment outlets to promote high encounter rates.
Knowledge gained over the course of this trial will help not only project partners based in China, but also researchers further afield, to implement these innovations in recirculating hatcheries and to facilitate a high level of control needed to achieve goals related to feed quantity, feed location, and larvae nutrition.
